Tuesday Trip Report: Bald Knob (Ossipee Range). August 17, 2012

We had the pleasure of exploring a bit of the Ossipee Range last week with new friends Mara, five-year-old Zoe, and three-year-old Mia.  I met Mara at my Somerville book signing; she and I have kept in contact ever since.  Mara and her daughters were in town for a long weekend and they invited us to hike a mountain with them.  We were happy to join them on an ascent of what would be their introductory peak, Bald Knob.

The trail up Bald Knob begins by the welcome sign to Moultonborough on New Hampshire's Route 171.

Shortly after leaving the car, we looked up and saw our destination.

There was about a mile of moderately steep trail between us and the summit.  Mia took the lead for a few minutes.

The other girls quickly caught up...

Continuing onward, into official conservation area...

Up a little bit more...

Max reaches the summit first...

We took a nice, long break by the summit lookout area...

The girls and I had an afternoon commitment, so we headed down earlier than I would have liked -- the company, views, and weather were outstanding and I wish we could have lingered longer.

Mia tired on the descent and became Mara's sleeping human scarf.

We arrived back at the trailhead feeling fine.  Congratulations to Zoe, who hiked her first mountain on her own two feet!

Many thanks for inviting us, ladies.  Hope to share a trail with you again sometime.
