The Friday Wrap: The Independent Moose Swims to Camp Moat

From here on out, I'm making my Friday Wrap titles more interesting (to me, at least).  I'm taking words that represent what went on during each day of the recent week and I'm stringing them together.  Read on, and hopefully you'll see what I mean.

On Monday, my friend Mynetta and I saw a ginormous moose alongside Ore Hill Trail.  Ore Hill is a bump on the Appalachian Trail, five-ish miles southwest of Mt. Moosilauke.  This hike is a lovely walk through the woods and perfect for those who want a couple of easy hours out.

It was Mynetta's first moose sighting and she was thrilled to see the big fellow.  I also enjoyed seeing him, but I enjoyed it more when he finally ambled off into the woods (he took his time moving away from the trail).  Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures of the encounter.

Tuesday morning was a blast.  I gave a talk to 5-8 year old camp kids at New Hampshire's Bethlehem Public Library.  That was so much fun!  I spoke about Up: A Mother and Daughter's Peakbagging Adventure, we discussed issues such as what to do if you're separated from your parents while on the trail (hint: whistles!), I passed out Hike Safe! pamphlets, and I fielded all kinds of interesting questions.  Good times.

Wednesday was the 4th of July -- the girls and their friends had fun at our local hometown parade.

Yesterday (Thursday), the girls, Max, MadRiver, and I hiked South, Middle, and North Moat (the trip report will be posted late Tuesday evening, July 10).

Today (Friday), our friend Tim C. took us out on Squam Lake.  The day was perfect -- blue skies, comfortable temperatures, lovely boat, and good company.  We all had an enjoyable swim.

And that's a wrap!  Have a great weekend, everyone.  The Monday Muse will make a temporary comeback next week.  I'll also post the Moats trip report, a Thursday Thing, and another interestingly-titled Wrap.

We took our second hiking trip to the White Mountains last week...we were so hoping to see a moose, but no luck. We even went for a couple of drives in the evening, passing the moose safari buses. We figured we should follow them or something!

Trekker Dog, I've been on at least 180 hikes in the Whites over the past four years and I've seen moose on the trail only three times, so don't feel bad! I've driven on White Mountain back roads a zillion times and have seen moose on only a handful of occasions. It's a matter of luck and odds. :)
